A Mechanistic Model for Carbon Dioxide Corrosion of Mild Steel in the Presence of Protective Iron Carbonate Films—Part 2: A Numerical Experiment

چکیده
A theoretical carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion model was used to conduct numerical experiments, which allowed total insight into the underlying physicochemical processes. The focus was on factors influencing protective iron carbonate film formation and the effect that these films have on the CO2 corrosion process. It was confirmed that high bulk pH, high temperature, high partial pressure of CO2, high Fe 2+ concentration, and low velocity all lead to favorable conditions for protective iron carbonate film formation. The model can be used to identify threshold values of these parameters. Corrosion rate was not strongly correlated with protective film thickness. The so-called surface film “coverage” effect appeared to be more important. Corrosion rates decreased rapidly as the film density increased. It was shown that in the presence of dense films diffusion of dissolved CO2 through the film is the main mechanism of providing the reactants to the corrosion reaction at the metal surface. It was demonstrated that “detached” films have poor protective properties even when they are very dense. Serious errors in prediction/ reasoning can be made by operating with bulk instead of surface water chemistry conditions. The former is made possible by using advanced models such as the one used in

A Mechanistic Model for Carbon Dioxide Corrosion of Mild Steel in the Presence of Protective Iron Carbonate Films—Part 1: Theory and Verification
A mechanistic model of uniform carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion is presented that covers the following: electrochemical reactions at the steel surface, diffusion of species between the metal surface and the bulk including diffusion through porous surface films, migration due to establishment of potential gradients, and homogenous chemical reactions including precipitation of surface films. The mo...

A mechanistic model was developed for predicting carbon dioxide corrosion rates of carbon steel pipes in multiphase flow conditions. The model incorporates the chemistry, thermodynamics of carbon dioxide dissolution, multiphase mass transfer, electrochemical kinetics on the metal surface and the presence of a corrosion product film. The predicted corrosion rates show good agreement with the exp...
متن کاملBasics Revisited: Kinetics of Iron Carbonate Scale Precipitation in Co2 Corrosion
Glass cell experiments were conducted to understand kinetics of iron carbonate scale formation in pure carbon dioxide (CO2) corrosion of mild steel. Weight gain and loss (WGL) method was used as a direct approach to investigate kinetics of scale formation. The experiments were done at the temperatures of 60C to 90C, and an iron carbonate supersaturation range of 12 to 350. It is found that the ...

This paper covers one of the building blocks required to complete a mechanistic CO2 / H2S corrosion model: electrochemistry of carbon steel CO2 corrosion in the presence of traces of H2S (3-250 ppm in the gas phase). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and linear polarisation resistance were used to investigate the mechanism of CO2/H2S corrosion in a glass cell at room temperature, at atmosp...
